But the battle for freedom is far from over. As the Empire reels from its critical defeats at the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance - now a fledgling New Republic - presses its advantage by hunting down the enemy's scattered forces before they can regroup and retaliate. But above the remote planet Akiva, an ominous show of the enemy's strength is unfolding.
For the handful of scattered Jedi, survival is imperative if the light side of the Force is to be protected and the galaxy somehow, someday reclaimed. Yet more important still is the well-being of the twin infants, Leia and Luke Skywalker, the children of Anakin and his doomed bride, Padme Amidala. Separated after Padme's death, they must be made safe at all costs, lest the hope they represent for the future be turned to horror by the new Sith regime, and the unspeakable power of the dark side.
Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master, has unified the Jedi order into a cohesive group of powerful knights. But as the new era begins, honor and duty will collide with friendship and blood ties. The Skywalker and Solo clans find themselves on opposing sides of an explosive conflict, with potentially devastating repercussions for both families, for the Jedi order, and for the entire galaxy.
The overthrow of the Republic is complete. The Separatist forces have been smashed, the Jedi Council nearly decimated, and the rest of the Order all but destroyed. Now absolute power rests in the iron fist of Darth Sidious - the cunning Sith Lord better known as the former Senator, now Emperor, Palpatine. But more remains to be done.
After a violent civil war and the devastation wrought by the now-fallen Darth Caedus, the Galactic Alliance is in crisis and in need. From all corners, politicians, power brokers, and military leaders converge on Coruscant for a crucial summit to restore order, negotiate differences, and determine the future of their unified worlds. But even more critical, and far more uncertain, is the future of the Jedi. Five years after the Death Star was destroyed and Darth Vader and the Emperor were defeated, the galaxy is struggling to heal the wounds of war, Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting twins, and Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long-awaited line of new Jedi Knights.
The Sith Empire is in flux. Still, Darth Karrid, commander of the fearsome Imperial battle cruiser Ascendant Spear, continues her relentless efforts to achieve total Sith domination of the galaxy. Though the son of a Jedi master, Theron does not wield the Force - but like his renowned mother, the spirit of rebellion is in his blood.
But time is brutally short. Marc Thompson really manages to suck you into the books, he does amazing voices and covers the story so well, I find myself looking for books narrated by Marc Thompson these days over specific titles. The story was good and read well, lots of good moments.
Glad I bought it. Another great read. But after reading deceived I was really looking forward to how the emperor was killed and what happened to Revan. Other wise great book. As always Marc Thompson is brilliant, the story and characters are well thought out but there just seemed to be something missing for me.
I don't play KotOR, so the other books in this series didn't make much sense to me. I never got attached to the characters or their stories, putting the stories into historical context was difficult, and I ended up returning them all but Revan, which was also written by Karpyshyn. As a stand-alone story, I love this book! Quirky characters, witty banter, intra-galactic espionage, and an excellent pace.
It's not the Bane trilogy, but I still love this book, and listen to it whenever I have a afternoon that needs filling Bane is my favorite star wars trilogy, but it's a weekend project. First let me point out that I was completely unprepared for such an outstanding production from an audiobook. Tolkien book which is usually simply read aloud and I had not expected the accompanying sound effects, music, or voice narration to all come together and blow me away. I lost track of the hours just waiting for a chance to continue listening to the story.
Marc Thompson is by far the best narrator I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. While the production team may or may not have enhanced the voice for certain characters, Marc's pace and even narration will make you forget that you are in fact listening to a person reading a story, something that some other narrators make you only painfully too aware of odd sounds, limited tone for multiple characters, annoying voice, etc.
As for the story, if you have seen other comments about the story being average or anything short of excellent, ignore them. Take the story for what it's meant to be, an action-packed adventure by a highly adept intelligence agent set in a galactic universe. If you want to be entertained then this story more than just does the trick. Since my discovery of this book I have worked back through all the Old Republic books and am now listening to the Thrawn Trilogy; the one constant I appreciate aside from the excellent story line is of course Marc Thompson narrations.
Would you consider the audio edition of Annihilation to be better than the print version? At this time, I have both read this book and listened to it. I love the different accents Marc Thompson gives the characters. I think I do like the audio version more. What was one of the most memorable moments of Annihilation? The first, sort of, action scene where Theron steals the Black Cipher.
Legendary Adventures: The Old Republic: Annihilation – Mynock Manor
It was a really fun part of the book. Which character — as performed by Marc Thompson — was your favorite? While my favorite character is Theron how can he not be!? He's the son of the 2 most freaking awesome characters ever!!! I love her accent and the way he makes her sound. Not much different from the way I read her, but definitely gives more life to the character. If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be? Star Wars meets in this action adventure! Any additional comments? Again, this is the best Star Wars I have ever read.
It was extremely fast paced and was filled with both intense action and some family drama. I suppose I am used to reading a series, but this book just blows every other single Star Wars book out of the park! Would you listen to Annihilation again? I would for the excellent narration. Where the connection between the son and the parent is revealed.
How does this one compare? I have. Just as good as his last ones. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Any Star Wars fans should check out Marc Thompson's narrations. This book was amazing especially since the main character was not a jedi but instead a spy. I can give this book nothing less than a perfect score across the board! Drew Karpyshyn is a creative genius and an incredible storyteller. Annihilation, like Revan, was a gripping tale that I was unable to pry myself away from.
I even found myself tuning in for a chapter or 2 during downtime at work! Because of this book and Revan, I will most definitely be checking out the highly recommended Bane trilogy next! Marc Thompson gives a top notch performance here. The plot follows Theron Shan as he works to destroy a Sith superweapon.
The Emperor has gone missing, and is presumed dead. The Sith Empire is in chaos, but they are emboldened by upstart Sith Lords to begin fighting the Republic as they vie for the ultimate power in the galaxy. Using brutal battlefield tactics to dupe a fellow Sith, she is able to assume a seat on the Dark Council, despite not coming from a pure Sith or human line.
We learn about her as a Sith, both through her relationship to Darth Malgus and the Dark Council, and by her relationship to her former Master Gnost-Dural. At one point, she captures Gnost-Dural alive and takes him in for questioning, really opening up her character. While the plot is fairly straightforward, there is a lot of intrigue which spices up a few key parts of the book.
As one of the main characters is revealed as his father, and as Satele deals with being a Grand Master and mother, all three characters grow a lot. All in all, Annihilation is a fun romp in the ancient galaxy. It recaptures the heart of the OT while repainting it with new toys and new contexts, but retaining some of the soul of the original films.
This book may not become essential reading and, for the most part, The Old Republic might as a whole fade into faint memory , but it is worth the fun ride. Chris is the Sous Chef at the Mynock Manor. Beware the Power of the Dark Side!
