Seeking comfort for the indefinable sense of loss that overcomes him, he goes in search of landscapes — painted landscapes that broaden his vision. The half-blind filmmaker travels through Europe in the footsteps of seventeenth-century landscape painter Claude Lorrain. Travelling companions who, without his realising it, mirror his own past, in which a long-lost love never gives up her secret.

Its topics range from the tension between artist and model to the landscapes of the American West, the surfaces of a second-hand New York City, and the predicament of transcultural photography.

Taco Hidde Bakker has selected and revised sixteen pieces of writing from a variety of publications spanning the past decade of his journeys through photography and art. In addition, Bakker has written four new pieces for this volume. It is possible to see without being seen, and to hear without being heard, but one cannot touch without also being touched.

The scene is set decades earlier, when both are young men. Although Tilden initially approaches Roosevelt intending to chastise him for laziness, he instead finds himself—almost against his will—whittling a set of eyeglasses out of bark, and handing them to the young black man.

It vanished even before he could achieve positive recognition. It is an inner vision, and a moral vision, that allows them to see clearly, and face to face. All rights reserved. Please email comments to letters commonwealmagazine. Seeing Is Believing. By Cassandra Nelson.
