An interesting aside here is that when the cat o' nine tails is taken away from her, she has a greater desire to flail herself and that the penance is more fully in her control. There is no judging of Gautier from Collins, but he does castigate society through Gautier's own words, that when she was orphaned as a girl she reached out for help but received none from the Paris rich.

From there, she went onto the stage and her own weaknesses of personality put her on a destructive path. She doesn't blame the acting profession as inherently immoral. Collins' moral - if I'm correct - is that social welfare or Christian charity could have saved this girl from an unhappy life and a rather drastic way to "repent. Karla It's more of a curiosity piece than a story, I think. But I'm a Wilkie completist too, and it's short, so May 07, Ishtar rated it liked it Shelves: short-story.

A very touching story of a French actress who is determined to take the right path for the rest of her life after a tragic turning point. A very good and inspiring read. Mademoiselle Gautier, gone from a sinner to a saint, mentions to us in a sub-point that this was not the life meant for her, not meaning to say that the life of a stage performer is that of a sinner and immoral lowlife. A very good and important conclusion.

And as the note said, this was published on a magazine and therefore you can deduct from the writing style that it is not a story to fully engage with and sympathize with the character. Highly recommended! Jan 13, Laura rated it liked it Recommended to Laura by: Karla. Shelves: e-books , read , short-stories. I wish the author had touched more on changes in the character's mental state and developed psychological descriptions of the story. Jul 04, Stuart rated it really liked it.
