Students should make every effort to take exams on the days scheduled.

If one of the above commitments conflicts with an exam, the student should notify me as soon as possible, preferably at the beginning of the semester. In general, the alternate date for an exam will be before the class takes it, not after. Students may not make up any work missed due to family vacations or travel home for break. If during the semester special needs develop because of illness, injury, family death or similar emergency, please notify me as soon as possible so special arrangements can be made to provide the assistance you need.

Email Policy Students should make a practice of checking their Marquette email accounts regularly since important and time-sensitive course information may be communicated that way. I am teaching four Theology classes at Marquette this semester, so when you email me, please include your class Theology and Economics and its meeting time xx p. Please consult the syllabus before emailing me with questions about assignments; I reserve the right not to answer questions that can be found in the syllabus. I will do my best to answer email within 24 hours, except on the weekends.

Rather than answer questions about course material over email in the days before exams, I will create an online forum on D2L so the entire class can post questions and see my replies. Meeting Policy You are always welcome to email me to set up a meeting to discuss particular questions about course material, talk about study strategies for theology, continue discussions beyond our class time, or just to introduce yourself.

Rieger, Joerg. No Rising Tide: Theology, Economics, and the Future. Minneapolis: Fortress, 2009.

You do not have to have a specific question about course material to set up a meeting. I can meet during official office hours , or by appointment or drop-in. Mornings are the best time to drop in since my classes are clustered in the afternoons. In fairness to other students I will not provide feedback that amounts to pre-grading work, such as reading drafts, but I can meet to discuss the assignment with you upon request.

Class Cancellation Policy If Marquette cancels classes due to weather or other unusual circumstances, check your Marquette email. If more than one of our classes is cancelled this semester, I reserve the right to hold class online through D2L or to assign additional work outside class to make sure we stay on track with the material. Grading Policy Students are responsible for monitoring their own grades, including course attendance and participation. D2L makes this easy. I do not calculate grades for students.

However, if I have made a mistake in calculating a grade math , please bring it to my attention immediately. The following scale is used to convert numerical scores to letter grades. In-class writing exercises will be collected frequently, though not every day, and checked for attendance and quality check-plus or check. In- class writing exercises that earn check-plus indicate that you have done the reading and approached the question thoughtfully. Occasional homework assignments also contribute to this portion of the grade and count as 2 in-class writing assignments. Electronic devices are not allowed in this class and students who use them are liable to have their participation grade lowered without warning.

When participating in class discussion and small group work, be mindful of helping all voices be heard. If you are not speaking, say something; if you are speaking more than others, choose to listen for a while, or ask another student what they think. It will consist of term identification, short answer and essay questions. You are not expected to do any outside research for this paper, but can and should draw on a range of our course readings.

Papers will be graded on understanding of course material, originality and clarity of argument, and style and mechanics. A more comprehensive rubric will be available on D2L. Translated by Lothar Krauth.
