Bleach, Vol. Their group joined by Ganju Shiba who helps him learn to create a Sprit Orb, Ichigo learns that Ganju's hatred towards Soul Reapers is because his brother was killed by one.
Meanwhile, within the walls of the Seiretei, the Thirteen Court Guard Squad captains have an emergency meeting over the intruders before they are alerted. After Ichigo's group completes their training, seeing that Ichigo is not a bad guy, Ganju decides to join them to see with his own eyes if Soul Reapers are evil or not.
This tankobon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. It introduces the main characters — the thirteen captains of the Seireitei very briefly as they serve temporarily as the main antagonist for Ichigo Kurosaki and his group who is still trying to get into the Seireitei to rescue Rukia Kuchiki. Separated at their entry, we see Ichigo Kurosaki initial reception. All in all, Bleach, Vol. Feb 23, DonutKnow rated it really liked it. Feb 12, Nick rated it it was amazing.
When a Hollow, an evil spirit, attacks Ichigo and his family, Rukia attempts to defeat the Hollow, but is wounded. To help him save his family, she lends Ichigo some of her powers, but something goes wrong, and Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Ichigo becomes a temporary Shinigami, and works with Rukia to handle the hunting of hollows until Rukia can recover.
At least, that was the plan Before I picked up the manga, I saw the first four episodes of the anime at Stellarcon ' It was a fansub this was before it was airing on Adult Swim , so the translation wasn't great, but I fell in love with the characters and mythology of the series. I immediately started picking up the manga and planning a costume for Ichigo. A few months later, I cosplayed Ichigo at Heroescon, had read all of the manga that had been translated, and watched as much of the anime as I could get my hands on.
So, what's the big deal, right? I think it comes down to the characters. There are dozens of of them, and the writer Tite Kubo takes the time to give them all detailed backgrounds and relationships. I'm 19 volumes in, and while there's plenty of action, it's the character development I'm hooked to. In the first 19 volumes, there are three main groups of characters, humans, the Shingami, and the Quincies. When humans die, their souls become Wholes or Hollows. Wholes are normal spirits, but the spirits that become Hollows are corrupted souls that must feed on the souls of the living kind of like spiritual vampires.
The Shinigami release Wholes and help them cross over to the Soul Society the spirit world , and cleanse the Hollows so that they can cross over as well. The Quincies use bows made of spiritual energy in the form of bows to hunt Hollows, similarly to the Shinigami. However, unlike the Shingami, who purify the souls of the Hollows preserving the balance of souls between the two world, the Quincies destroy them.
This endangers the balance of the world, and as a result the two groups went to war. This only scratches at the surface of the series. I highly recommend checking out the series, it's fun, interesting, and has some great cosplay opportunities. For more manga and anime reviews, please check out Hobotaku. I did not intentionally line up my read-through of the series with VIZ's release schedule, but I'm definitely pleased that the last volume will be available when I need it.

It kind of feels sacrilegious to be burning throu Assuming that I'm mathing properly, Bleach runs 74 volumes. It kind of feels sacrilegious to be burning through something that took Tite Kubo fifteen years to produce at a pace that will likely get me through the entire series in about 7 months, if I average ten volumes a month as I did for the first ten, but my pace might actually slow down. I've been reading a volume, then watching the anime series. So far the anime has been between two to three episodes per volume, but I suspect that they're going to really increase the amount of episodes they get out of each volume.
In fact, that might start happening pretty quickly as we finally start getting into some key battles. Volume 10 ends with us starting our first real battles against Soul Reapers. Pro: First appearances of some of my favorite Captains: Hitsugaya! Pro: Things start feeling like they matter. Which isn't to say nothing previously mattered, but this feels like Bleach proper, not Bleach set-up.
Pro: Kukaku Shiba's headwrap. Con: Still hate Ganju. Con: The first half is kind of tedious with planning and training more than anything. Oct 20, Sebastian Gonzalez added it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

May 01, Emma rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novels Mary Sue and company infiltrate the soul society with some crazy crystal ball thing and must face all the captains and lieutenants and things of the soul society whose names I could not possibly remember because there are way too many of them. As in previous volumes, I enjoy the battle scenes but the ten million leadership members of the soul society annoyed me. Oct 27, Amanda Lila rated it it was amazing.

Bleach, Volume 10
Ichigo Kurosaki is not your typical Japanese sixteen-year-old. For one thing, he has naturally orange hair which makes him look like a delinquent. But more importantly, he can see ghosts. For some reason, his home city of Karakura Town is particularly inhabited by ghosts, and he can only very occasionally help out. This gift also allows him to see the initially invisible to normals Rukia Kuchiki, who is a Soul Reaper charged with escorting ghosts to the afterlife and fighting Hollows, ghosts tha Ichigo Kurosaki is not your typical Japanese sixteen-year-old.
This gift also allows him to see the initially invisible to normals Rukia Kuchiki, who is a Soul Reaper charged with escorting ghosts to the afterlife and fighting Hollows, ghosts that have succumbed to despair and become monstrous. He turns out to be a natural at the combat part of the job, though he still needs a lot of guidance on everything not involving hitting things.
However, someone in the Soul Society the organization that controls the Soul Reapers has accused Rukia of breaking their law by empowering Ichigo.
Ichigo is determined to go after her and rescue his friend, with the aid of Orihime, Chad and Uryu Ishida, an archer who belongs to the rival Quincy organization or would, if there were any other Quincies left. It was popular enough to spawn an animated television show and several movies, as well as video games and rock musicals. Kubo is great at character design, and tended to introduce a new herd of characters whenever he got stuck.
Bleach, Tome 10 : Tattoo on the Sky
This did, however, lead to a certain amount of cast bloat, so that fan favorite characters would often not be seen for many chapters as each new character got a moment to shine. Kubo, in common with many other shounen creators, also had difficulty with keeping female characters in the fray.
Orihime picks up one of the most broken powersets in the manga, but is a pacifist so seldom uses it to advantage, and is abducted in the arc immediately following the Soul Society, spending most of it the prisoner of the main villain. And the pattern for other female characters is similar. Back to the volume at hand, Our heroes, including Yoruichi the talking cat, have made it to Rukongai, the city where most of the Soul Society and their oppressed masses live.
Seriously, this is not a pleasant version of the afterlife. However, the massive stronghold of the Soul Reapers, the Seireitei, is protected by an anti-spiritual energy barrier, and they were unable to get through the gate. They have, however, managed to get temporary allies, the explosives expert Kukaku Shiba, and her surly brother Ganju. Ganju will be coming along as he has a grudge against Soul Reapers involving his deceased brother. Meanwhile, we look in on the Soul Reapers organization, briefly meeting more than a dozen new characters, some of whom will be important. We also see that they have internal politics going on.
Upon arriving in the Seireitei, the group is scattered by a poor landing. Ichigo and Ganju face off against the hot-blooded Ikkaku Madarame and dandyish Yumichika Ayasegawa of the 11th Division known for its combat skills. Ichigo does very well against Ikkaku, considering, but Ganju is outmatched against Yumichika and has to resort to running.
Back on Earth, the minor characters form a hero group to keep Hollows from overrunning Karakura Town while their main defenders are away. This is primarily comic relief. The introduction of the Soul Reaper captains, several of whom will remain relevant for the rest of the series, makes this a key volume. We already see foreshadowing of events that will come up much later. On the other hand, this is also the beginning of the cast bloat that became such a problem later on. I really liked this book because there are always fights and they always talk about the eleventh , twelve company and all that.
Also I liked the part when they went underground in the sewer so they can reach to their enemy to fight. As soon they went up one of the companies fighters were ready to attack and beat the enemy that the girl ambushed the two boys. Dec 14, Kassilem rated it it was amazing Shelves: 1-read-gns , 2-owned-gns. The first few chapters drag a little but once they all arrive in the Seireitei, lots of action and comedy begins. There's also more focus on the Soul Reapers, especially the captains.
As this arc progresses, the story is getting better and more intense. Feb 07, Krista Ivy rated it it was amazing Shelves: youth , ghost , sterlington , strong-female , action , manga. Ichigo and crew learn how to cast a spell that harnesses their spiritual energy so that they may be catapulted over the walls.
